Why: Why This Tool Exists
AI coding assistants come in two forms: one "gives advice," the other "does the work."
The web version of Claude is the former — you paste code into it, it tells you how to fix things, then you manually apply the changes. This back-and-forth friction adds up fast: finding files, copying, pasting, reading suggestions, understanding them, going back to make edits. For complex tasks, this loop can repeat dozens of times.
Claude Code's goal is to eliminate this loop entirely. It runs directly on your computer, reading and writing files, executing commands, running tests, committing to Git — autonomously completing the entire development workflow while you only need to describe your intent and do a final review.
| Web Claude | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|
| Code access | You paste it in | Reads local files directly |
| Execution | Gives advice, you act manually | Autonomous execution (file edits, running commands) |
| Context | Stateless, each session independent | Stateful, understands the full project structure |
| Best for | Explaining code, writing snippets | Implementing features, debugging, refactoring |
In one line: Claude Code = an AI programmer living in your terminal — one that actually does the work, not just gives advice.
